Saint Raphael has always inspired a certain gentle life style. In the 19th century, Felix Martin, a civil engineer built it into a famous seaside resort with the help of the railway line extended to the town in 1864. Frequented by numerous artists, it has a large place in Eugène Fromentin's paintings. Among the famous people to live here were Picasso, Ziem, Apollinaire and Saint-Exupéry.
Today it has become an important sailing resort because of its numerous nautical activities.
