On May 8 1889, Van Gogh left Arles for the Saint-Paul de Mausole asylum in
Saint-Rémy. There he would find the rest and the care needed to calm his
suffering. This was followed by a period of intense painting in the Alpilles
massif during accompanied excursions.
He painted with intensity a number of his major works here: “Cornfield
with Cypresses”, “Irises”, “Garden at Saint-Paul”, “Olive trees”… This time,
the way of painting changed: the hatching gave way to lines evoking the swell
and the colours became muted.
On a visit to the Alpilles and the Montagnette, you might encounter
another local figure, Auguste Chabaud, a fauviste passionate about Provence
who recreated in his works the force of the landscapes and customs here … Find
out more in the museum devoted to him at Graveson, next to the Montagnette.
