Because of the beauty of its site, for a long time this town has fascinated
landscape artists. If the best known is Paul Saïn, the painter with a regional
identity is Pierre Grivolas. The Director of the Avignon Fine Arts School from
1878 to 1906, he guided his pupils on style and sensitised them to the study
of light phenomena. He thus encouraged a generation of artists with recognised
talent, such as Firmin and Leydet. It was Jules Flour who made the first timid
step towards impressionism, followed by Seyssaud and Chabaud, who created a
mystic and symbolic image of a “Midi presque noir à force de Lumière”.
