For long-distance hikers, the region has several walks forming part of the
"Grande Randonnée" (GR) network. Through the Verdon, the Massif d'Estérel, the
Ubaye, the Lure mountain, the Ecrins & The network is immense.
Ramblers wishing to top up their batteries for a day - or even half a
day - have not been forgotten either : a great number of minor walks (Petite
Randonnée) are also available. In the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, 300
well-developed paths serve all the valleys.
In the Hautes-Alpes, hundreds of kilometres of marked out paths provide
an invitation to saunter from the gateway to Provence to the glaciers of the
Barre des Ecrins. In the Var, 198 km of coastal footpaths are open for a
stroll between white sands and steep cliffs.
In the Vaucluse, 4000 km of footpaths are marked out in the Ventoux, the
Luberon... The ones in the Bouches-du-Rhône take the hiker to sites that
inspired painters, Sainte-Victoire and the "calanques".
Most of the walks and itineraries are described in topographic guides.
Nevertheless, to enhance your discovery of nature or conquer the Alpine
summits, hikes can be organised with accompanying tour guides.
Finally, "gîtes d'étape", refuges and hostels welcome exhausted walkers
when night falls.
